Thanks to alum and current parent Dr. Gaby Levi '95 for sharing this Winnetka Talk article from June of 1994 which describes Pele's visit to NSCD. In case you cannot read the article here are the details. The event was arranged and used as a fundraiser for the Pan-Pacific and Southeast Asia Women's Association which has one of its five US chapters in Winnetka.
Dr. Levi, at the time just finishing his junior year at NSCD, introduced arguably the Greatest Soccer Play of All Time and Pele then spoke to the crowd of neighbors, students, and faculty. Then Upper School Principal Paul Perkinson is quoted in the article. But most of the article is Pele saying how excited he is to bring the World Cup to the United States. The United States got the bid for the 1994 World Cup in part because of Pele's enthusiastic support.
A number of students got pictures with Pele after he spoke and I heard from former Raider parent Claudia Lockhart and she shared a picture of Pele with Raider Alums Rebecca Lockhard '04 and Maddy Lockhart '07.
We are still not entirely sure how the event happened at North Shore, but we believe it was due to a faculty connection with the Pan-Pacific and Southeast Asia Women's Association. I tried to connect with the former faculty member we think was responsible, but the number I was able to find for her is no longer in service.
But for the history books, we now have documented evidence that Pele was on campus in June of 1994.
