Five Reads for Friday January 13th 2023

Yikes! It's the Friday the 13th edition of Five Reads For Friday. Enjoy these reads and I hope you have a safe day and weekend.

This article is about what has happened at St. Peters University after their Mens Basketball Team's incredible run in the NCAA Tournament. The coach has left for Seton Hall. The key players have left. However, a lot of positive things remain. For a small University, a run in the Mens Basketball NCAA tourney can have a transformational impact. I am torn on whether too many University Athletic Departments are betting on this happening to them and what that impact is on students. Great read from December.

The Damar Hamlin crisis has been chronicled all over and its great to see he is returning to health. There has been a lot of scrutiny of the medical team which seems to have saved his life. However, this article appealed to me because of the focus on Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott who helped the team and the NFL make some key decisions on leading them through this crisis. McDermott has an interesting life story playing high school football in the Philadelphia area, walking on at William & Mary, being noticed and promoted by Eagles Coach Andy Reid while McDermott was an intern for the Eagles. McDermott's work ethic and leadership has always been a difference maker.

I post this for my Michigan friends and family worried about what will happen next to their Head Coach. Short answer -- he should stay at Michigan. I hope he will but we will see in the next few weeks.

There are a lot of things that go on behind the scenes at elite college athletic programs. One of them has been that some programs are consumed by body composition. That has led to all sorts of negatives for athletes. Good to see this ending. Its probably a direct result of the athlete accusations of body shaming that has been happening. A significant and important culture change.

With the playoffs now starting in the NFL, this article reminded me of the first Super Bowl I remember watching. It was the 1973 Super Bowl which was a face off between the Washington Redskins and the undefeated Miami Dolphins. Even though I was not a Dolphin fan, something about the players on that team I will always remember. They included Mercury Morris, Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick, Garo Yepremian, Bob Griese and of course the coach Don Shula. This WAPO article is a great overview of the only undefeated NFL season in history.
