Five Reads For Friday July 1st 2016

I am a little late with posting this week, but we have had an interesting week at North Shore Country Day School. Our long time Head of School Tom Doar had his last day yesterday and daily work for our new Head of School Dr. Tom Flemma began.

This week was a sad week for coaches as three legendary coaches passed away. Sam Bell, who had served as head track and field coach at Indiana University for 28 years passed away on Monday. On Tuesday, Buddy Ryan,  the former Bears Assistant Coach on the '86 Super Bowl team and later Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach died. But the third loss was the most momentous as also on Tuesday Pat Summitt died. There were a lot of articles on all these coaches, but these two on Pat Summitt ere the most moving I read.
In Pat Summitt: A Toughness Greater Than Invincibilty -- Juliet Macur -- NYT

"The Game is Never Over" -- A Letter From Pat Summitt to a Young Player -- Sally Jenkins -- Washington Post

Here is an article on a coaching legend who is much loved and still at it.
A Legends Last Trials -- Runners World -- Liam Boylan Pett

If you are below the age of 15 and are only playing one sport all year -- or you are at parent of a child that does this -- here is a great read on why you should strive to play more than one sport.
Playing One Sport Year Round Isn't Smart -- Washington Post

And finally a good argument for why coaches need to be generalists not specialists from the Science of Running and Coach Steve Magness.
Strength Training, Dating, And Models: How Our Beliefs Impact us As Coaches -- Science of Running -- Steve Magness

Have a great Holiday Weekend!
