The Week That Was North Shore Athletics March 7 through March 13

Sorry for the delay. It was primary day yesterday here in Illinois and my civic duty slowed me up. But we have lots of good stuff from last week. Here is the summary of events

No matter what the season, it's a great achievement to have athletes competing on the last day of a high school season. The last day of boys basketball season for Class 1A was Saturday March 12th and although basketball ended for us almost 2 weeks ago, we did have one player almost make it to that last day. Senior Matt Morette advanced to the State Final Prelim day -- March 10th -- in the 3 Point Shooting contest. He was the first boy to do that for North Shore. A couple girls have made it to this level. But no one has made it past this State Final Prelim day. Matt came the closest.

Thirty two boys representing the best from all the regions of the State of Illinois each got the opportunity to take 15 3 point shots in the Prelim round. The Top 4 would advance to the finals on March 11th. Matt made nine 3 point shots which tied him for 4th place. What that meant is he had to go to a tie breaker round. In the first tie breaker, he was again tied with 2 other boys. So they went to a second tie breaker round and that time Matt got knocked out. Officially he finished 6th in the state which is the top performance of a girl or a boy we have ever had at the that State 3 Point Shooting contest. But to me it was also cool that someone was still representing North Shore Country Day School in boys basketball in the last week of the season.

The track team had their last meet of the indoor season open to the full squad at the Henry Crown Fieldhouse at the University of Chicago. But since most of the track team was involved in the musical, only 13 competed. Those 13 put up some great marks, with 23 personal best, 22 seasonal bests and one indoor school record (Katie Glew '17 ran 11:45 for 3200m). But the highlight of the meet may have been the sprint races between brothers Joey '18 and Jacob Buterbaugh. Jacob attends Whitney Young and usually throws the shot and the discus but surprised his brother by entering the dashes Friday. It was a lot of fun and great display of brotherly love!

There are a couple more meets that some of our top track athletes will be in over spring break. But for most that wraps up a productive indoor season.

Last week was also the second week of spring sports and with the nice weather, our spring athletes got the rare opportunity to consistently practice outside. Looks like this week we may get all our athletic events in something that hasn't happened for several Marches.

More on our start to the spring season next week.
