The Week that Was (TWTW) is a new post I am going to try and get up by Tuesday of the week after. The purpose is a brief summary of events of North Shore Athletics and some maybe general thoughts of the week in sports that might relate.
The week after Christmas is often a quiet one in Winnetka and at North Shore. We had open gyms Monday - Wednesday last week. The Monday one was very well attended and it was a great to see a number of our Varsity Girls come in and practice Tuesday. Wednesday was pretty quiet as was the rest of the week.
But the boys Varsity Basketball team was in the Christian Liberty Tournament in Arlington Heights on Tuesday and Wednesday. Although a little short handed due to some vacation travel this year by some of their players, the team played four very close games. On Tuesday they lost in Overtime vs. Illinois Lutheran 59-56 but came back to defeat tournament favorite Freeport Aquin in the evening game.
On Wednesday again the Varsity started a little slow, losing to Chicago Waldorf 47-46 but came back to defeat host Christian Liberty 60-50 in the evening to go 2-2 for the tournament. Despite being a little short handed this tournament was a great opportunity to allow others on the team to grow and contribute. The lessons from this tournament will definitely help down the road.
The rest of the sports world seemed to be focused on either bowl games or the new revelations about performance enhancing drug use in sports. Although many people have been distracted by the Peyton Manning allegations in the Al-Jazeera report, I strongly recommend you watch it. The ultimate take away for me is that governing bodies of sports seem to be at the very least not taking this threat to fair play seriously. This has a trickle down effect to youth sports. The full report is below.
