Five Reads for Friday May 22nd

The month of May is a big Birthday month in the McHugh family. Yesterday was my Dad's birthday so a belated blog happy birthday to him. He's 84 and still working! I hope I bring the same passion and energy he does to whatever I am doing at 84.

This week has been non stop action. On Tuesday, Blake Oslan '16 defended his singles title at the ISL Conference tennis tournament. He became the first Raider to do that since Peter Flanzer '76 and now Blake can become the first three-peat winner next year.

Wednesday got even more action packed as the Raider Baseball team defeated CMSA in the IHSA Regional Semi-Final game 10-0. And in Elgin and short handed -- due to injury -- girls soccer team took a favored St. Ed's Girls Soccer team through two overtimes and 7 rounds of Penalty Kicks before St. Ed's won. Yes, a heart breaker. But given the formidable issues our Raiders had to overcome, possibly one of the greatest games in any sport in North Shore history.

Thursday, Senior Tonya Piergies competed in the Girls State meet finishing 3rd in her heat of the hurdles and Long Jumping 15'10.75". Solid marks but not enough to advance to the finals on Saturday. And the last Middle School game of the year happened when our Raiders beat Willows Academy.

Today, Boys Tennis begins their Sectional Tournament and Boys Track & Field runs in their Sectional Track Meet.

Tomorrow, the Boys Baseball team plays Francis Parker at 11 AM for the Regional Title.

It has been quite a week. Here are my five reads.

You Don't Know Leftsetz? Seth Godin
Too much doing, Not enough knowing. Great line. Great post.

How to Spend the Last 10 Minutes of Your Day -- HBR
This is another "do as I say not as I do" as I write these words close to midnight Thursday. But the article just confirms a lot of things to me. High achievement starts with good habits and one of those habits I have to figure out is better sleep. I will start tomorrow. I promise.

What it Means to Be A Hall Of Famer -- Jason Gay -- WSJ
Sportswriter Jason Gay's Dad was a long time high school tennis coach at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School. Thus the understanding that the life of the teacher coach is one of patience where what we teach sometimes is not understood or appreciated immediately. Sometimes it takes years.

Why Baseball is Losing Children -- WSJ
Little league as many of us knew it around the country is struggling with numbers. Read the article why. I don't think this is just a baseball issue, though. This is a youth sport issue. Youth sports is becoming a multi - billion dollar industry for those families who want to devote a lot of time, energy and dollars. Programs like Little League which are community and volunteer based are going to die in this type of environment.

The Happiest Day Of Your Life -- Gary Kasparov -- St. Louis University
The most powerful piece I read this week was Chess Champion Gary Kasparov's Commencement Address at St. Louis University. This link will take you to the text and a video of Kasparov delivering the speech. I have re-watched it several times this week. I find it very inspiring and hope you do too.

Good Luck to all our teams this weekend!
