Coaching Lessons from the First Day Back from Spring Break

Yesterday was our first day back from break and given our schedule and what we want to accomplish this spring, the temptation is to squeeze in something that first day back. We just don't have enough time to do everything we want to do in this shortest of all seasons. I wanted to squeeze in a hard workout for our track team. Our baseball team wanted to squeeze in a make-up game.

But here is what I should know after doing this job for over 20 years and coaching for over 30. The first day back from spring break should be only about getting back into the routine of school. Doing a whole lot more than that is probably fruitless.

Teachers struggle with the first day back from spring break. So imagine how kids feel. That being said, not much should be taken from a first day back from break loss or an off workout on the first day back. It's just the way it is.

One day I will learn, people are people and schedules are schedules. And no matter how little time we have, people and their needs have to considered first.
