From everything I have read and studied, we have a lot to learn about nutrition. Clearly we have an obesity epidemic. Over the course of my life I am sure I am well above average when you look at cumulative activity, and I have increasingly struggled with weight as I have aged. So what's the problem? Am I just increasingly slothful and gluttonous? I do not think so.
One of the best books I read this year was Dr. Tim Noakes's Challenging Beliefs. I will admit to a bias. I enjoy studying the ideas of people who challenge popular beliefs. In the roots of these people's ideas is progress and our future. What I like about Noakes is he is a scientist who is an athlete himself. He truly walks (or runs) his talk. I have written about him a couple other times in this blog.

Tim Noakes --TedXCapetown Talk 2012
As he says himself, he may have found his final mission in life. That is to reform our beliefs on nutrition. He has taken a sabbatical to work on a book on nutrition and what his beliefs are. On November 21st, he presented his ideas in a public lecture at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Cape Elizabeth South Africa.
I think he's right. And if he is, I think one day we may be referring to him as Dr. Tim Noakes, Noble Laureate.
Unfortunately, I do not have the embed code for the lecture so you will have to get to it through this link. I had to also download a plug-in to view it. Trust me; it's worth it -- a fascinating presentation.
Is the "Heart Healthy" prudent diet the single worst medical mistake of the 20th century? A review of the "science" that produced a global change in dietary advice after 1959.
