One of the principles of planning and coaching that I follow is to plan with the end in mind. The end is usually the end of the 12-16 week season, the end of the school year, or the end an athletes high school athletic career. But what if we planned with the literal end in mind, meaning moving on to our just rewards. How would we change things in our life?
This year has been a year where I have set a goal to be a better physical role model for our students. I am making slow progress. Although I fantasize about big fitness goals, I have tried to do just what I tell our students which is stay consistent every day. But I have also become more interested in how some folks who are older stay fitter than others. Below is a video of an extreme example -- a 96 year old sprinter. These trailblazers of late life fitness are teaching us all new lessons on a full life.
One of the greatest lesson from these elderly athletes is that healthy competition is part of their lives late into their lives. It seems like the type of life I would wish for all our students. It's also amazing to imagine that maybe someone in our high school right now might be still competing in the year 2100!
