I think the interesting part of working at North Shore Country Day School is we are supposed to stand for more than the ordinary school experience. So that sometimes challenges me. Too often I feel we get too obsessed with wins and loses. I hope no one thinks I am downgrading wins or championships. I certainly enjoy them. But I think they can distract us from the essential reason of why North Shore Country Day School sports over any other school sport program. If you are really just interested in winning, you can go down the street to a public school that wins almost all the time.
I hope the difference in North Shore Country Day School sports is never about championship programs or even playing time. It is about helping young people create a meaningful and happy life. And if that is the case, then our sports experience should emphasize helping young people form strong positive relationships with their teammates and their coaches.
We probably fail on that goal at times as many of us struggle or fail at the other relationships in our lives whether family or friends. But as we head into the final season of sports for the 2015-16, I hope our community will keep in mind that our mission is far greater than the scoreboard.
Here is an interesting Tedtalk on why.
