Thursday ended our official summer conditioning program. I want to thank Mark Medhurst for staffing and organizing this program as well as Kristen Allen and Bryn Nottolli who provided Athletic training services. I also want to thank the many coaches who regularly stopped by to participate in summer workouts. We are very fortunate as a community to have such skilled people supporting our athletes and teams.
I think I have written about this before but to me summer conditioning at North Shore started with Liam Cavanaugh and Rob McCaffrey -- both members of the Class of '97 -- requesting an opportunity to lift in the summer time before the summer of either '95 or '96. Alums have told me that there had been summer pick up football, baseball and basketball in previous decades. But it was not until Liam and Rob came to me that we started developing a summer conditioning program that focused on improved sports performance. There have been ups and downs over the 20 summers between Liam and Rob coming to me and now. But in the last couple of summers we have reached a high point.
What I liked about this summer is the number of overall athletes we saw in the weight room or on the field -- I would guess it was close to a third of the Upper School -- and the fact that we had just as many girls as boys working out. I think we have a lot to look forward to this school year.
With that being said, there are probably some athletes who have not been doing a lot in the last couple of weeks and will be starting to worry about preparing for the fall. Here is a link to a good article on catch up training focused on runners, but it goes for all athletes. Here are the key steps.
1) Start by being CONSISTENT
2) Be realistic about what you can do
3) Communicate with your coach
