Bill Bowerman -- Professor of Competitive Response

Monday will be the start of my 22nd year at North Shore Country Day School and my 28th year as a teacher and a coach. In August every year, no matter how hard I have worked over the summer, I always worry that I am not as prepared as I would like to be for the school year. This apparently is a very common teacher experience. My English teacher wife Kathy has the same nightmare every August about entering a classroom full of students and feeling unprepared. If you know Kathy, you know that is a preposterous scenario. But these are real feelings many teachers cope with at this time of year.

In order to reassure myself that everything will be OK, I watch a movie of some kind to inspire me or give me some confidence that I can do it.

This 30 minute documentary on the life of Bill Bowerman is what I watched this morning. I recommend it to all teachers and coaches. The life story of Bowerman is one that will inspire you. He was so much more than a teacher and a coach to his students and athletes.

Trying to live up to this example somehow makes me feel much more prepared for what's to come. I am looking forward to a great year!
