A Spring Sports Message

Today we start High School Spring sports in the state of Illinois and here is a picture of our fields this morning. It has been rare in my 21 years at North Shore not to have some snow on the fields during the first week of March. This is the second year in a row that we have close to a foot on the fields. We still hope to start games for varsity baseball and varsity soccer the week of March 16th.

What is interesting to me as well is how different the weather is in Northern Illinois from Southern Illinois. If we are lucky today, we will get to 30 degrees. In Cairo Illinois at the far southern tip, temps will get to the mid- 40's. The best day this week here in Winnetka may be tomorrow where we will get some melt as temps will reach 40 degrees if we are lucky. But in Cairo, it will be 60 degrees.

Life is not fair. What I have learned in my years of coaching is that the constraints that your community has actually become the fun part. We all have limitations and problems but some people figure out how to overcome theirs. So that is the lesson to me about spring sports in Illinois. It's not going to be as nice weather wise as Cairo Illinois. But we can still figure out how to get our teams to flourish.
