Snow Day and Super Bowl Blizzard of 2015

Today is a Snow Day at North Shore.

Given the cold days that Chicago schools had in early January when it was not that cold, snow days have become somewhat controversial. But I think this was a good call.

Reports this morning seem to be confirming that yesterdays Super Bowl Blizzard will be among the 10 worst snow storms in Chicago history. The weather Sunday seemed to get worse and worse as the day went on.

Part of the arrangement for my family living in Wavering House is that I check doors on Saturday and Sunday night after everyone is gone. I have fought my way through some pretty ugly weather in my 21 years of doing that. But last night was among the hardest nights ever due to the cold blowing snow and drifts that covered walk ways. It will take a while to clean-up campus this morning.

A not too closely held secret is that teachers like snow days as much as their students. The unexpectedness is part of the fun. One of my first dates with my wife Kathy actually happened on a snow day in Philadelphia area in 1989. Somehow I got to her apartment in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on a very snowy day and we walked to the movie theater. So I actually attribute a snow day to the start of our relationship.

I won't be going to the movies today. But it will give me a chance to get caught up on a whole variety of administrative issues for our teams. So I will be in the gym most of the day. Have a great snow day!
