This week has been a wild one for me. First we had the excitement of the Super Bowl. Next we got a snow day on Monday. Thank you for calling it during halftime of the Super Bowl Mr. Doar. Next I missed a day on Wednesday to head to Wisconsin to learn about some new potential athletic opportunities. That makes Thursday a nutty day because I got behind on a bunch of stuff. And today, I head to Champaign Illinois to support ten of our athletes at our first track meet of the year on Saturday.
It's been crazy but a lot of fun.
Here are five reads for this week.
The Greatest Race You've Never Heard Of -- Letsrun.com
As I get older, i make a lot of excuses about my physical state. Every once and a while I call myself out. And that goes like this. "Hey, if that guy can do that, why can't you work a little harder just to stay in reasonable shape!" Well, this article was a calling out. Amazing story of a race almost no one remembers, which was won by a fellow who is totally unexpected. Worth a read even if you are not a track nut.
Meditations on Teaching and Practice -- Vern Gambetta
What did Basketball player Allen Iverson once say? "we talking about practice?" Yes, I am talking about practice Allen, and I am going to just talk about practice again and again and again. Because your amazing performances start with practice! Here are some coaching points about creating effective practice from Coach Gambetta. One of the best coaches I know who happens to talk about practice A LOT!!!!!
The Rare Find -- Steve Magness and Jon Marcus
I am cheating on this one as it is not a read. It's my new favorite podcast. Steve Magness is a super smart coach. I get to hang out with him every June and his friend Jon Marcus must be smart too. They talk today about talent identification this week. Really interesting stuff.
LeBron Thinking Outside the Box -- ESPN
LeBron apparently wants to win so much that he is willing to sacrifice playing time to win the championship. He's probably not serious. But it is a sign to his teammates that he is willing to do anything to win. Be Teamcentric and see the real goal for the group. LeBron is trying to establish a winning culture in Cleveland.
UGA's Dynamic Approach to Concussions, Mental Health
Here's my thought here. Concussions have become the biggest sports injury story of our time. But because it is so big, is it covering up other important issues that people are failing to address because everyone is consumed by concussion worries?
Today is Latin vs. North Shore in Boys Basketball. Go Raiders!
