A Sixth Read for Friday November 14th

I have one more read to recommend today. It is our Head of School's remembrance of his Uncle John. I had heard over the years through my interactions with the Doar family about their Uncle John Doar and his work in the Justice Department of the 1960's. But in characteristically Doar understated fashion not a lot was made of it. John Doar once had an important job, and he did it to the best of his ability.

It wasn't until President Obama honored John Doar with the Medal of Freedom that I started realizing what courageous work he did. And finally reading John Doar's obituary in the New York Times this week was I able to see him fully as an American hero.

Midwesterners are characterized as friendly, conventional, hard working and principled. These traits are present in all the Doars. And as I thought of the challenges of the mid-1960's for our country, I realized how lucky we were to have a Doar with those character traits leading the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department at that critical time.

Read our Head of School Tom Doar's remembrance of his Uncle John below.
