Five Reads For Friday April 25th

Meb Keflezghi's win at Boston still is with me and although many of you may not be running fans, I think there are lessons from his win everyone can gain from -- lessons on character, perseverance, temperament. So their is a definite marathon theme to a couple of these suggested reads this week. But there are a couple others on two interesting folks I have met in my days as Athletic Director whose careers in athletics are flourishing right now. It is the Prom this weekend. Enjoy!

Meb Strong: How Meb Worked His Magic Once Again -- Dick Patrick
I have already posted this week about how Meb Keflezghi's win moved me. Many others have been too and Meb has had a busy week appearing on morning and evening television and throwing out the first ball at the Red Sox game. But the back story about his Boston Marathon win is even better which Dick Patrick explains here. By the way, his autobiography Run to Overcome is excellent too.

Talent ID 2.0: Stop Measuring Talent and Start Measuring Temperament
It seems that almost every other week I am posting something Daniel Coyle wrote, and I do once again here. After close to 30 years of coaching, I would say that temperament trumps talent on the road to success almost every time. Of course you need talent for some success, but temperament is what leads to maximizing your talent. The previous article on Meb is also revealing about talent.

The Shot Doctor -- Grantland
I have met a lot of interesting people in 20 years at North Shore. I briefly met Chip Engelland who was living in Chicago at the end of the Bulls championship runs and trying to find places to hold a shooting camp. I tried to persuade him to coach one of our Middle School basketball teams. He could not do it. I did not quite realize until after that meeting that he was so well regarded as a shooting coach. For the last 15 years he has been working in the NBA full time. It is great to see how his career has developed. He impressed me as a really nice guy. I think it is particularly telling that he would not comment for this article.

2014 Racing Season Recap -- Science of Sport
Science on Sport recaps the major Marathon spring racing season which ended with Boston last Monday. The most interesting point here is that the most interesting race of the four major marathons around the world this spring was Boston. And Boston was the only race not to employee pacers. Also interesting to find out that New York is the only major marathon in the Fall not to employee pacers. New York and Boston always create fascinating races because without pacers the unexpected happens -- like Meb winning. Pacers may lead to fast times but also predictable results. Who in sports likes that?!

Greg Thompson -- A Wonderful Teacher
I met Greg about eight years ago through GAIN. Greg had started his career at Detroit Country Day School and now worked in Farmington Public Schools in Michigan. Greg has been a huge influence in updating our PE curriculum and teaching as he has come twice to North Shore to work with our teachers. Congrats to him for being recognized by the state of Michigan as one of their best teachers.
