I have often felt like a man without a team in the NFL. My Baltimore allegiances were to the Colts. But after I left town, they left for Indianapolis. (I do not think the two events are connected.) I cannot cheer for the Colts anymore, and I will never use Mayflower Moving Company who moved the Colts from Baltimore in the middle of the night. (Remember what Mayor Daley did to Meigs Field. It's a lot worse when your football team is destroyed in the middle of the night.)
I really have gotten over this. It was 30 years ago now.
Today, I cheer for the Bears mostly, but not as passionately as my friends who grew up with the team. And this week I will be cheering for the Baltimore Ravens!
Here are two of the best articles I have seen so far about the Ravens. I think both articles have lessons to consider regardless of the importance of next Sunday's game.
The first article linked here, John Harbaugh's Remarkable Journey, is an interesting perspective on Raven's Head Coach John Harbaugh career perspective -- truly refreshing.
The second article Flacco's Canon Has Been Firing Long Range Missiles For Years is also worth reading because it challenges several myths about high school athletic development I hear a lot these days. Joe Flacco came from a small high school, he rarely lifted weights in high school, and he played three sports throughout high school. Joe Flacco's development shows that talent can flourish anywhere, lifting weights in high school is not essential, and athletes (instead of specializing) should play multiple sports as long as possible.
Hope you enjoy the reads.
This probably won't be my last Super Bowl post this week. But in the meantime GO RAVENS!
